Welcome Letter

Thanks to everyone who participated, in some way or another, in breast cancer awareness activities last month. Hundreds of people shopped, ate, watched and supported Komen Columbus by participating in one of the many events held by our generous community members. The color pink seemed to be everywhere - the effort to end breast cancer has gone global!

Operation Red Zone: Strengthening The Safety Net
Holzer Cancer Center and Holzer Medical Center are host to the Komen Columbus-funded “Operation Red Zone: Strengthening The Safety Net” program year-round, but in October they joined forces to bring awareness, excitement and above all, passion to the breast cancer movement in their community.

On October 1st, Komen Columbus Executive Director Katie Carter and Director of Community Outreach Megan Knapke, visited Holzer to meet with key grant program personnel and other hospital administrators. The visit included a tour of downtown Gallipolis to see the pink storefronts and city park, a tour of the entire Holzer campus with an opportunity to “judge” each medical departments’ pink decorations, an official proclamation of “Passionately Pink for the Cure Day” in Gallia County and many exciting encounters with breast cancer activists.

Employees also put together a great “Pink Glove” video, where you can really see their passion - and love for dance - come through.

The “Operation Red Zone” program is funded to provide education, outreach, free and low-cost screenings for underserved women, and patient navigation for women diagnosed with breast cancer in Gallia and surrounding counties. If you would like more information about this Southeastern Ohio program, please contact Brobinson@holzerclinic.com.

Don’t forget! Komen Columbus is now accepting proposals to be considered for 2011-2012 grant funding support of breast health screening, education and treatment programs.

The Request for Proposal and application instructions can be found online.

The deadline for submission of proposals is December 1, 2010. Proposals must be submitted via hard copy and electronically. This is a competitive grant process and funding is not guaranteed.
