August 2010

Welcome Letter

It's hard to believe it's August already – where has the summer gone? Enjoy the nice weather and keep an eye out for some unusual sights around Central Ohio this month. First there’s the bright pink RV that is Komen on the Go, heading to the Ohio State Fair from August 5th-8th.

The following week dozens of golfers will hit the links at the Glenross Golf Club as part of Golf for the Cure, followed by members of the inaugural Columbus Marathon for the Cure team running together at the One Mile Event in Westerville.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and we hope to see you soon at one of our upcoming events!

Grantee Spotlight

The Battelle Breast Care Center at Madison County Hospital
Dr. Mitchell Spahn, Director of The Battelle Breast Care Center and Mona Flax, the Director of Development for the Madison County Hospital Foundation, know that Madison County has a breast cancer mortality issue; the county ranks first out of 30 counties in our service area for mortality. To help combat that dismal statistic, Dr. Spahn and Ms. Flax are working to spread awareness of breast cancer throughout their community, as well as reducing barriers to care and asking local survivors to help share their stories.

Dr. Spahn sees women in his OB/GYN practice every day that haven’t made an appointment for their annual mammogram, women that don’t know about their risk for breast cancer or don’t realize that early detection can save their lives. Ms. Flax, a survivor herself, works diligently with the hospital staff and healthcare providers to make sure women don’t slip through the cracks and miss potentially life-saving treatment.

What began as a hospital-driven community campaign has become a comprehensive program that assists women throughout the continuum of care. From basic breast health education, to free screening mammography, to patient navigation and survivorship support, the Madison County “Breast Cancer Education, Screening and Treatment Project” funded by Komen Columbus does it all. Although the program is just beginning, it is making a difference in the lives of many women already.

For more information about the grant program at the Battelle Breast Care Center at Madison County Hospital, please contact Mona Flax.
